Somewhere in the middle of the emotional spectrum was first baseman Daric Barton, who was optioned to Sacramento along with infielders Jack Hannahan and Cliff Pennington and outfielder Chris Denorfia.
Barton, who batted .226 as a rookie in 2008, went 1-for-1 on Saturday to finish the spring with a .361 batting average, but he spoke in calm, measured tones while discussing his demotion.
"Last year said it all," said Barton, who knew his fate was sealed when the A's signed infielders Orlando Cabrera and Nomar Garciaparra in early March. "I'm just going to go down and do what I can do."
