The Windy City Thunderbolts of the independent Frontier League have signed right-handed pitcher Brandon Garner to a contract for the 2009 season.
Garner, 21, joined the Thunderbolts in August of 2008 after being released by the St. Louis Cardinals organization in July. The former Cardinals' 2005 18th round pick (560th overall) made stops at both Single-A Quad Cities and A-Advanced Palm Beach before his release during the 2008 season.
The Yale Senior High School product made eight relief appearances posting a 0-0 record, 2.57 ERA, earned one save, and kept opponents to a .095 batting average. Garner allowed two hits, two earned runs, walked five, and struck out five over seven innings for the Thunderbolts. Windy City finished with a 60-36 regular season record and swept Kalamazoo for the Frontier League Championship, with Garner leading the playoffs with two saves.
Over the winter off season Garner even had a tryout with the Chicago White Sox.
