The St. Paul Saints of the independent American Association have signed right-handed reliever Scott Vander Weg to a contract for the 2009 season.
Vander Weg, 26, was a 33rd round (1010th overall) selection by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2005 amateur draft. He pitched four seasons in the Cardinals organization, making stops at New Jersey, Quad Cities, Palm Beach, and most recently Springfield in 2008.
The Lamar University product was one of a handful of Redbird players that were suspended during the 2008 season for failing a mandatory MLB performance enhancing drug test. Vander Weg missed the first 50 games of the season and opened with Double-A Springfield, making 19 relief appearances posting a 1-1 record, 4.10 ERA, and earned one save. He was released in early August and picked up a week later by the Philadelphia Phillies, where he was assigned to A-Advanced Clearwater. While at Clearwater, he compiled a 1-0 record, 8.53 ERA, and one save in six relief appearances (6.1 innings).
St. Paul finished the 2008 season with a 42-54 record and were first in league attendance.
