The Move From Third

Russell Branyan is the designated first baseman this season.

There's only one bit of trouble. He's been a third baseman the past six years, and when he hasn't been at third, he has been an outfielder.

He has had a couple of grounders eat him up recently, and in Wednesday's 6-2 loss, he was charged with an error in the Royals' six-run fourth.

"There are different angles, and they take some getting used to," Branyan said. "It's going to be all right, but I've got to make some adjustments. Fortunately, we have a long time left this spring."

Fully aware that Branyan has played just 18 games at first base in the past four seasons, Wakamatsu knows that his first baseman will need time to make the switch.

"He was always athletic as a third baseman, and that hasn't changed," Wakamatsu said. "And he's played first base before. It'll come. We knew coming in we were going to try to expedite things, but it will take some time."
