Arms Race

Veteran pitcher Sidney Ponson arrived in camp, one day after signing a minor-league contract, and went through a bullpen workout.

“I signed a minor-league contract,” he said. “I’m just trying to get a major-league job. They told me straight up, ‘Nothing is for sure.’ I know that coming in.

“I’m going to pitch. If I have to go to (Class AAA Omaha), I go down there and pitch. If they need my help, they call me up. If they don’t, I stay down there.”

Manager Trey Hillman said Ponson will compete with Horacio Ramirez, Brian Bannister and Luke Hochevar for a spot in the rotation

“We’ll get him lined up to evaluate him the same way we’re evaluating Horacio and Banny and Hoch,” Hillman said. “He’ll be in that mix.”

The Royals have not yet decided when Ponson will make his spring debut.
