Analyzing The Big Decisions Of Spring

Skip Schumaker will be the Cardinals' starting second baseman

It's a risky yet wise move by the Cardinals. Schumaker needs to be strictly platooned with Brendan Ryan, and late-inning defensive replacements will be an obvious necessity. Still, Schumaker's a career .324 hitter against right-handed pitching, and he'll be a net asset even if he's somewhat below average with the glove. If the experiment fails, then Schumaker can be returned to the outfield, and Ryan and perhaps Joe Thurston can take over at second. It's a sensible calculated risk on the part of the Cardinals.
