There were some givens when Joe Torre completed the 2007 season as Yankees manager. He had taken the Bombers to 12 straight playoff appearances, won six pennants and won four World Series. His No. 6 uniform would be retired, Old-Timer's Day invitations would be proffered and New York's favorite son would stand in the pantheon of Yankee favorites such as Mantle and DiMaggio and Ford.
