Daric Barton, the incumbent first baseman, won't play in the first four or five games because he is still trying to catch up on his conditioning following October hip surgery. Geren said Barton is doing all activity, including regular running and running the bases. The team had expected Barton to be a bit limited in the initial stages of Cactus League play, so this is not a surprise.

The A's held a dress rehearsal of sorts Tuesday, playing a quick intrasquad game on the eve of their Cactus League opener, but first baseman Daric Barton wasn't in the lineup.
