Manchester Memorial High graduate Chris Lambert, looking to crack the Detroit Tigers' rotation, doesn't want any company for today's ride to Lakeland, Fla. It won't be pretty.
"I hate driving cross-country. It's not enjoyable going with me," said Lambert, who lives in Boston. "I'll go alone and try to do it as fast as I can."
The right-hander reached the majors with Detroit last season, beating Minnesota for his first win and going 1-2 (5.66 ERA) in eight appearances. Lambert has been working out at the gym, hitting the squat rack, in preparation for his sixth pro season.
"It'll be interesting to see what happens. I'd like to think I'm in (Detroit's) plans," he said. "I'll do my thing, and if it's good enough, great. If not, I'm sure at some point they'll call me up (from Triple-A)."
