After a string of springs that saw them audition starters for the at least one spot in the rotation, manager Tony La Russa acknowledged this morning that the five spots on this year’s staff are fairly set. Not only that, but the first four — Chris Carpenter, Adam Wainwright, Kyle Lohse and Todd Wellemeyer — are well entrenched and accomplished. It’s Joel Pineiro, La Russa said, that has some proving to do before being mentioned in the breath.
