Reyes, for example, is expected to be the No. 4 starter, though he, too, comes with baggage: a right elbow that periodically forces him onto the disabled list. Shapiro says the chronic condition is not conducive to surgical repair, but so far a little rest has kept Reyes on the mound most of the time.
Most of the time? After he was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in July, Reyes pitched well (2-1, 1.84 ERA) until his elbow began to ache, and he sat out the last three weeks of the season.
''We have the fourth and fifth spot open,'' Shapiro said. ''But if Anthony Reyes is healthy, he most likely will make our team as a starter.''
At this moment, Reyes still is not throwing with 100 percent effort, but he is not expected to be far behind his lodge brothers during camp.
