Jeff Luhnow Visits With Bernie Miklasz & Joe Strauss

  • Farm system has been getting better over the last few years.
  • Finding that teams are interested in more than just one player in the Cardinals' system, rather than in years past.
  • Does not rely on third party prospect rankings.
  • Does not believe they over value their own prospects.
  • Case by case decision when it come to trading players.
  • Talks about building on that third leg of the stool...equalling things out between player development, trades, and signing free agents.
  • Losing a first round pick has some value, when signing a type-a free agent. Really depends on the replacement and how he affects the roster.
  • Spreading the money out across the draft and international signings, instead of wasting it on one single pick (Rick Porcello).
  • Too early to say whether Jess Todd or Clayton Mortensen are major league starters.
  • Mortensen has the stuff to be a #2 starter, Todd can eat innings.
  • Bryan Anderson is a catcher, no other position being considered. Affective and still has time to improve.
  • 2005 draft has been successful.
  • No guarantee's on Mark McCormick. Still maintained everything even after surgeries. Could be moved into the relief role for 2009.
  • Jon Jay, Allen Craig, P.J. Walters, Fernando Salas, and Francisco Samuel are some names that missed the BA Top 10.
  • Teams are interested in Samuel.
  • Very high on Niko Vasquez, most likely headed to Quad Cities for 2009.
  • Brett Wallace drafted for his bat and plans are to play him at 3B or possibly LF. Pop Warner was positive on Wallace's play at 3B.
  • Chris Perez progessing well over the offseason. Both Perez and Jason Motte will show up ready to go in 2009.
