Cardinals Winter League Notebook 1-30-09

*Venezuelan League*

Jose Rada (GCL): Did not pitch for Aragua.

Three former Memphis Redbirds played for Caracas:
Armando Rios went 1-for-4 with one run and one strikeout.
Vladimir Nunez started and lasted just 2/3 of an inning, giving up two hits, three earned runs, three walks, and striking out one.
Orber Moreno pitched one inning allowing two hits, one run, and striking out three for his second hold.

Aragua came back to beat Caracas 10-6: Boxscore

Final game of the series plays Friday's:
Aragua visits Caracas @ 7:30pm VST, Championship Series is tied up 3-3.

*Nicaraguan National Championship*

Former DSL players Walter Santos and Edgard Montiel are listed on the Boer-Managua roster.
Play begins January 31.

*Dominican Republic League*

According to the official site, the league is standing by the suspension of a player on the Gigantes del Cibao team and the forfeit that followed the next game: Link

*Caribbean Series*

Opening Day February 2:
Venezuela (N/A) vs. Dominican Republic (Licey)
Puerto Rico (Ponce) vs. Mexican Pacific (Mazatlan)

Amaury Marti (Memphis) and D'Angelo Jimenez (Memphis-free agent) play for Licey.

Ex-Cardinal Jorge Sosa may not be pitching (or show up late) for the Licey in series. His passport for Mexico is in the United States. The team is on the phones trying to fill holes left by players leaving: Link

Former Memphis Redbird Raul Gonzalez is confirmed to be accompanying Ponce to Mexico for the series, he will be starting in the opening game. Ex-Cardinal and Ponce manager, Eduardo Perez, would like to end the nine-year drought of not winning the series. Looks like newly signed free agent Joe Thurston will not be playing: Link

*World Baseball Classic*

Albert Pujols (St. Louis) spoke with reporters in the Dominican Republic on his desire to play in the WBC: Link

As I posted yesterday, Ex-Cardinal Sidney Ponson confirmed he will pitch for the Netherlands and future Hall of Fame hopeful Bert Blyleven will coach Holland: Link

One of Cuba's top players, Ariel Pestano, will announce his retirement after the Classic. He has helped the team win three Olympic medals (2000-silver, 2004-gold, and 2008-silver) and the 2006 WBC : Link
