Cardinals Winter League Notebook 1-20-09

*Mexican Pacific League*

Former Memphis Redbird Nerio Rodriguez started for Hermosillo and made it through seven batters before being pulled. He gave up two hits, three runs, and three walks.

Former Memphis Redbird Edgar Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a double and RBI for Mazatlan.

St. Louis Cardinals and former Cardinals that were eliminated Monday (regular season stats):

Shawn Garrett batted .154 with one double, three RBIs, five total bases, two walks, nine strikeouts, .214 OBP, .192 SLG, and .407 OPS in six games for Guasave.

Spike Lundberg made two starts for Guasave posting an 0-1 record and 6.43 ERA. He allowed ten hits, seven runs (five earned), one home run, hit one batter, walked six, and struck out wight over seven innings. Lundberg also pitched for Estrellas in the Dominican Republic League and Zulia in the Venezuelan League this winter.

Ray King made four relief appearances for Guasave posting a 7.36 ERA. He allowed five hits, four runs (three earned), one home run, hit one batter, walked one, and struck out one over 3.2 innings. King also pitched for Escogido in the Dominican Republic League before being drafted to play for the Gigantes in the playoffs.

Chris Narveson made seven starts for Hermosillo posting a 2-2 record and 3.54 ERA. He allowed 36 hits, 19 runs (16 earned), five home runs, nine walks, and struck out 42 over 40.2 innings.

Nerio Rodriguez made one relief appearance for Hermosillo pitching one inning, striking out two. He pitched for Escogido in the Dominican Republic league before joining Hermosillo.

*Venezuelan League*

Jose Rada (GCL): Did not pitch for Aragua.
Aragua scored three runs in the ninth to beat La Guaira 8-6: Boxscore

Richard Castillo (Quad Cities): Did not pitch for Lara.
Ex-Cardinal Cesar Izturis went 2-for-4 for Lara.
Former Memphis Redbird Vladimir Nunez pitched a complete (eight inning) game for Lara, giving up six hits, two runs, no walks, and striking out eight for his first loss in the playoffs.
Zulia scored two in the fourth and held on to win 2-1 over Lara: Boxscore

Ex-Cardinal Ray King faced one batter and gave up a hit and run for Gigantes.

With this win, Gigantes are headed to the Championship Series to take on Licey.

Amaury Marti (Memphis) and D'Angelo Jimenez (memphis-free agent): Play for Licey.

Championship Series begins Tuesday:

Ex-Cardinal Alberto Castillo could be left off the Aguilas team in the future due to his age and decline in play.
