Brewers Lukewarm Interest In Mark Mulder, Russ Springer Deal, & Cardinals Stay On Top Of Kris Benson

The Brewers, however, also seem lukewarm on Mark Mulder, who is coming off two shoulder surgeries and trying to overcome past mechanical problems. Of course, their opinion might change once Mulder starts throwing for clubs in February.

The A's might not be done upgrading their bullpen after completing their one-year deal with free-agent right-hander Russ Springer, who will receive more than $3 million plus incentives, according to a rival executive. The A's also are interested in free-agent lefty Brian Shouse, another source said, and they were one of three teams to attend a recent workout by lefty Andrew Sisco, who is 10 months removed from Tommy John surgery. The Rockies and Giants also watched Sisco throw.

The Dodgers, Rangers and Cardinals, sources say, are showing the most consistent interest in Benson, according to a major-league source. Benson, 34, underwent rotator-cuff surgery in March 2007 and last pitched in the majors in 2006. An executive from a club with interest in Benson said he looks only "so-so," in his throwing sessions. "Better than expected," the exec said, "but not great."
