Cardinals Winter League Notebook 12-18-08

*Mexican Pacific League*

Hugo Castellanos (Memphis-free agant): Did not pitch for Obregon.
Former Memphis Redbird Iker Franco doubled and had a pair of RBIs.
Former Memphis Redbird Reggie Taylor drove in two runs.

Fernando Salas (Springfield): Did not pitch for Mazaltan
Obregon crushed Mazatlan 9-1: Boxscore
Obregon (23-34) visits Mazatlan (35-23) Thursday @ 8:00pm MST.

*Veracruz Instructional League (Mexico)*

Joe Rogers (Memphis): Entered in the seventh and pitched one inning. Allowed three hits and two earned runs.
Minatitlan gave up three in the 12th and lost 9-8 to Xalapa: Boxscore
Rogers was scheduled to start, I'm not sure at this time why he didn't.
Minatitlan (15-7-1) host Xalapa (14-9-1) on Thursday.

Francisco Rivera (Quad Cities): Entered as a pinch hitter in the eighth and ground out.
Acayucan was pounded on 14-5 by Santa Rosa: Boxscore

Richard Castillo (Quad Cities): Entered in the fourth and pitched 3.1 innings. Allowed three hits and no runs. (ground out-fly out:1-7)(inherited runners-scored:2-1)

Jose Penaloza (GC): Pitches for Zulia.

Amaury Marti (Memphis): Started in right field and batted 7th. 2-for-4 with one home run, two RBIs, one run, and one strikeout (swinging).
D'Angelo Jimenez (Memphis-free agent): Started at first base and batted 8th. 1-for-4 with one double and two strikeouts (swinging and looking). Assisted in one double play in the field.

Jose Arredondo (Johnson City) who missed the whole entire 2008 season due to an unspecificed injury made his first appearance of the winter league season. Entered in the eighth and pitched two innings. Allowed three hits, one earned run, and struck one out. (ground out-fly out:1-3)
Aguilas scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth but came up short losing 6-5 to Estrellas: Boxscore (note: this could also be the Jose Arredondo that pitches for the Angels)
Aguilas (24-23) have Thursday off, visit Escogido (23-24) Friday @ 7:30pm AST.

Former Memphis Redbird Nerio Rodriguez returned to the rotation for Escogido.
Ex-Cardinal Ray King pitched to two batters, for Escogido, giving up a hit and blowing the save, but picked up his first win in league play.
Former Memphis Redbird Danilo Sanchez took the place of injured Jarrod Saltalamacchia and doubled driving in two runs for Escogido to give them the win: Boxscore

Gigantes del Cibao is struggling to get fans to come to the ballpark, they are projected to lose money during the 2007-08 winter season: Link
Albert Pujols was planning on playing for the team in the month of December (10 games), but the nerve surgery he underwent put an end to that.

*Colombian League*

Sincelejo beat Barranquilla 11-9, Davis Bilardello (Palm Beach) picked up the save.
Cartagena shut out Monteria 1-0.

Barranquilla will be doing some work on their stadium and the league is seeking funding to continue play in the 2009-10 season: Link

*Puerto Rican League*

Yadier Molina (St. Louis) and Luis Mateo (Johnson City): Did not play for Carolina.
Carolina @ Arecibo was postponed for Wednesday.
Ex-New York Yankee Bernie Williams is expected to join Jose Oquendo's team this coming weekend.

Joe Thurston (Memphis): Started at second base and moved to left field, batting leadoff. 2-for-5 at the plate. (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 1)
Ponce scored on in the bottom of the 11th to beat Santurce 3-2: Boxscore

League has only one game Thursday, Carolina (10-18) visits Ponce (20-10) Friday @ 7:30pm AST.

The Puerto Rican team is excited about the 2009 World Baseball Classic and looks to redeem itself after a quick exit in the 2006 tournament: Link
Yadier Molina has signed a contract to play, Joel Pineiro and Ex-Cardinal Felipe Lopez are also expected to play.
