Cardinals Winter League Notebook 12-17-08



*Hawaii Winter Baseball (R.I.P.)*

MLB, HWB Conclude Three-Year Contract: Link

It might not have been a high profiled league, but I enjoyed keeping an eye on it the last two years. Marco Gonzalez and Michael Cooper took part last season. This year we had Tony Cruz, Tyler Herron, Blake King, and Jim Rapoport all participate.

*Mexican Pacific League*

Ex-Cardinal Juan Acevedo struck out two of three batters faced and picked up the hold for Mexicali: Boxscore

Hugo Castellanos (Memphis-free agent): Entered in the seventh and pitched 1.1 innings. Allowed no hits or runs. (ground out-fly out:2-2)(inherited runners-scored:1-0)

Fernando Salas (Springfield): Entered in the seventh and pitched to two batters, getting them to fly out and picking up the hold.

Obregon (22-34) visits Mazatlan (35-22) Wednesday @ 7:30pm MST.

*Veracruz Instructional League (Mexico)*

Joe Rogers (Memphis): Did not pitch for Minatitlan.
Minatitlan beat Xalapa 15-9: Boxscore
Minatitlan (15-6-1) hosts Xalapa (13-9-1) on Wednesday.

Francisco Rivera (Quad Cities): Entered the game late as a pinch hitter and ground into a double play.

*Venezeulan League*

Former Memphis Redbird Mike Smith started for Caribes and lasted four innings giving up nine hits, three earned runs, one home run, and striking out four for his second loss in league play: Boxscore

Former Memphis Redbird Orber Moreno struck out two of four batters faced and picked up the hold for Caracas: Boxscore

Jose Rada (GCL): Entered in the fourth and pitched to five batters. Allowed two hits, two earned runs, one walk, and struck out one. (ground out-fly out:0-1)(inherited runners-scored:2-1)
Jose Martinez (Springfield): Did not play for Aragua.
Ex-Cardinal Carmen Cali was saddled with three hits, two earned runs, and one strikeout in a 1/3 of an inning for Aragua.
Aragua scored the winning run in the bottom of the 11th to beat Margarita 11-10: Boxscore
Aragua (27-22) welcomes Lara (28-24) Wednesday @ 7:30pm VST.

*Venezuelan Parallel League*

Juan Lucena (Springfield-free agent): Started at second base and batted 9th. 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
Jorge Rondon (Quad Cities): Entered in the ninth and pitched one inning. Allowed no hits or runs and picked up his second save of the winter season. (ground out-fly out:2-1)
Aragua scored three in the eighth to break out of the tie and beat Margarita 9-6: Boxscore

No Cardinals' prospects played for Caribes.

Former Springfield Cardinal Luis Perdomo made his return after missing over a month of action. He pitched the eighth inning giving up a hit and walk for Aguilas.

Amaury Marti (Memphis): Started at designated hitter and batted 8th. 2-for-4 with one triple, one home run, two RBIs (one with two outs), one run, and one strikeout (swinging).
D'Angelo Jimenez (Memphis-free agent): Started at first base and batted 9th. 0-for-1 with two runs and three walks. Assisted in one double play in the field. (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 1)
Licey scored five in the sixth to ensure an 8-2 win over Aguilas: Boxscore
Licey (25-21) host Gigantes (27-19) Wednesday @ 7:30pm AST.

Former Springfield Cardinal Juan Richardson went 3-for-4 with a double and solo home run for Estrellas: Boxscore

Barranquilla beat Sincelejo 5-1.
Sincelejo MGR and Cardinals' catching instructor Dann Bilardello and other coaches held a baseball clinic in the morning before the game; post games notes: Link

Monteria beat Cartagena 2-1.

If the league does not get the support from the fans from now until the end of the season the league may decide to shut down completely after the season. The Renteria brothers are losing too much money to continue running the league: Link

*Puerto Rican League*

Joe Thurston (Memphis 2009): Started at second base and batted leadoff. 1-for-5 with one triple, one run, and one strikeout. Assisted in one double play in the field.
Ponce scored one run in the bottom of the tenth to beat Arecibo 5-4: Boxscore
Ponce (19-10) welcomes Santurce (15-15) Wednesday @ 7:30pm AST.

Yadier Molina (St. Louis): Started at catcher and batted 8th. 0-for-3 at the plate and threw out one base runner.
Luis Mateo (Johnson City): Did not play for Carolina.
Carolina gave up two runs in the first and never came back losing 2-1 to Mayaguez: Boxscore
