Free Agents Can Make Or Break Season

Starting pitcher: Kyle Lohse, Cardinals
Contract: One year, $4.25 million

Even with a thin free-agent pitching class last winter, Lohse wasn't able to net a multi-year contract. Instead, the right-hander signed a one-year pact with St. Louis on March 14. As it turns out, Lohse got his wish in the end. After notching no more than nine wins in the previous four seasons, Lohse went 15-6 with a 3.78 ERA and logged 200 innings for the Cardinals. That helped earn him a four-year, $41 million extension in September.
