Cardinals Claim Lefty Charlie Manning Off Waivers

Adding depth to an area where it was sorely needed, the Cardinals claimed left-handed reliever Charlie Manning off of waivers from the Washington Nationals on Wednesday. St. Louis added Manning to the 40-man roster, and designated Josh Phelps for assignment.

Looking to address an organization-wide lack of depth, the Cardinals claimed lefthanded reliever Charlie Manning off outright waivers Wednesday. Manning, 29, was immediately added to the 40-man roster, and he’ll come to spring training with a chance to compete for a spot in the Cardinals’ bullpen.

Manning, 29, was 1-3 with a 5.14 ERA in 57 outings with the Nationals. He was the main lefty out of the bullpen until the month of September, when Michael Hinckley took over the role.
