Bullpen Problems Plaguing Division leaders

Cardinals' staff in limbo

The St. Louis Cardinals, who lost 7-3 to the Cincinnati Reds, are looking more like wild-card contenders than a team that can beat the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central.

And, the Cardinals are uncertain about the roles of pitchers Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter for the rest of the season, but Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan said that the picture could become clearer Tuesday.

Each will throw a bullpen session at Busch Stadium.

Wainwright, out with an injured finger, struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings of a rehabilitation start at Class AA Springfield (Ill.) and the Cardinals aren't sure if Wainwright is going to return as a starter or closer.

It depends on Carpenter, the 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner who is having pain in his triceps area. Duncan told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that it is possible Carpenter could return to the rotation when the Cardinals play Milwaukee during the last week in August.
