The Mariners signed free-agent pitcher Jorge Sosa and assigned him to Tacoma. Sosa opened the season in the New York Mets bullpen, going 4-1 with a 7.06 ERA in 20 games. More recently he was pitching for Triple-A Round Rock, a Houston Astros affiliate. Sosa, 31, was originally signed by the Colorado Rockies and played four years as an outfielder before the Mariners acquired him and moved him to the mound in 2001. Sosa has pitched in the majors with Tampa Bay, Atlanta, and the Mets. To make room for Sosa, Tracey Thorpe was transferred to Double-A West Tennessee, where he will be a starting pitcher.
