Surviving & Thriving Despite Injuries

Cardinals

St. Louis is a major surprise, in part, because guru pitching coach Dave Duncan has guided former relievers such as Braden Looper and Todd Wellemeyer to rotation competence. Adam Wainwright is blossoming into an ace and, GM John Mozeliak said, the late-spring signing of Kyle Lohse (3-0, 2.36) was "a trigger" toward success. And St. Louis might have five arms returning before the All-Star break:

Mark Mulder (shoulder surgery) will make at least two more rehab starts; Matt Clement (shoulder), who hasn't started since June 14, 2006, and Carpenter (Tommy John surgery), are both throwing in extended spring; and two relievers who helped the championship bullpen in 2006 Tyler Johnson (strained rotator) and Josh Kinney (Tommy John) are due back by July 1.

"We are managing this club as if they are not coming back," Mozeliak said. "If they do, it is a huge bonus."
