Ace pitcher Chris Carpenter blew out his elbow on opening night and things kept going downhill, as St. Louis finished 78-84 to end a run of seven straight playoff appearances and complete its first losing season since 1999. Pitcher Josh Hancock was killed in April in a car wreck, and finally, general manager Walt Jocketty was fired a few days after the season ended, symbolic of a divided frontoffice.
