That suggests the Giants have a deal in mind for a more experienced catcher, and one possibility is 28-year-old Humberto Quintero, who came up with Bochy's Padres in 2003 and for the last three seasons has been Brad Ausmus' little-used backup in Houston. Quintero is a career .233 hitter with a good defensive reputation. The Astros have designated Quintero for assignment.
The Rays also have two expendable catchers, Josh Paul and Mike DiFelice.
