Gordo Live Jan. 21, 2008

jrocke217: hey gordo,
so how did you like the talk about jose oquendo recommending juan gonzalez & alex cintron to the cardinals managmemnt after seeing them play in puerto rico? some people compare it to the situation the cardinals had with greg vaughn in 2004. if signed to a minor league deal & he doesn't work out he can be cut, no loss or no gain. but if he's picked up he could take at bats away from other outfielders coming up.
thanks

Jeff Gordon: Exactly. Juan Gone has some baggage, but he would be worth a no-risk look. And with Rolen gone, the Cards wouldn't have to worry about Cintron crashing into him.

jrocke217: do you see maybe cesar izturis getting a shot at leadoff in the batting order sometime this season? he didn't do to bad of a job in venezuelan winter league play when stuck in that role.thanks

Jeff Gordon: But his big-league OBA is abysmal. So, no, that would be setting him up to fail.

jrocke217: what is the real reason for the hiring of mike aldrete? just seems like a questionable hiring to assist with the hitters. is hal mcrae not holding down the job very well or is it more of a position to look deeper into the hitting stats?

Jeff Gordon: I like the move. I'm a McRae fan, but Aldrete is an old on-base percentage guy. He could be a new-age coach, using computers and such. Perhaps he bridges the gap to the "analytical department" that Jocketty didn't like so much.
