Melvin has discussed acquiring a veteran third baseman, such as St. Louis' Scott Rolen or Texas' Hank Blalock, allowing rookie of the year Ryan Braun to move to left in an attempt to strengthen the team's porous defense. To acquire either, Melvin would have to blow a hole in his team elsewhere, which he figures is pointless.
