Ex-Cardinals Watch 9-6-09: Brian Barton Clears Waivers; Vladimir Nunez Called Up; Kip Wells Has Great Start

Brian Barton (Braves):
Tim Hudson has been activated from the 60-day disabled list and the Braves made room for him on their 40-man roster by placing outfielder Brian Barton on waivers. Barton cleared waivers on Monday and was outrighted to the Triple-A Gwinnett roster.

Vladimir Nunez (Braves):
In other Gwinnett-related news, the Braves provided their bullpen some more depth by purchasing right-handed reliever Vladimir Nunez's contract. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, they promoted Jordan Schafer from Gwinnett and then placed him on the 60-day disabled list.

Kip Wells (Reds):
Kip Wells allowed just one hit in six scoreless innings and Joey Votto blasted his 21st home run, as the Reds beat the Braves, 3-1, on Saturday night for their sixth straight victory and 11th win in 13 games.

Jeff Suppan (Brewers):
Jeff Suppan, RHP, Brewers - The veteran was placed on trade waivers late in the week. It will be interesting to see if any contending team still looking for an experienced starter puts in a claim or tries to make a deal for him. The Brewers also placed J.J. Hardy on trade waivers. If Hardy, who has had a dreadful season and was even demoted to Nashville, isn’t dealt now, he’s sure to go in the offseason.

Mark Mulder (Free Agent):
Mark Mulder, LHP, free agent - Mulder, sidelined by shoulder problems, decided not to come back this season despite making progress with his throwing program. Mulder will likely play winter ball and continue to work with pitching coach Rick Peterson. With minor league baseball just about over, there was no point in attempting to come back this season.

Coco Crisp (Royals):
Re-sign Coco Crisp. Here’s another defense-centric move. There is substantial risk here because Crisp is having labrum surgery on both shoulders, but his range in center field and speed at the top of the lineup make this worth it. Add Crisp’s warm feelings about the Royals, and maybe he’d sign for well less than the Royals’ $8 million option — which they hold for 2010 and almost certainly will decline — if the deal included significant incentives.

Jim Leyland (Tigers MGR):
Yesterday, Jim Leyland won his 1,400 game as manager. He is only the 24th manager to ever do that. That same win also pushed him one past Wilbert Robinson, as the (undeserving) Hall of Fame skipper won 1,399 games in his career. By the end of the year, Leyland should pass up three more managers on the all-time win leaderboard, including Hall of Famers Al Lopez and Miller Huggins.

  1. Was the Boston paper making a joke? The idea that someone would claim Suppan on waivers and be willing to pick up the remaining $16 million he is owed over the next 13 months is so ridiculous it is beyond funny. Even to trade for him now (with the Brewers picking up almost the whole tab), after the deadline for being eligible for the post season seems silly.

  2. he was the only one to report suppan being placed on waivers. beat out some of the other writers to the scoop. maybe he got just a little excited about coming up with it first and forgot a few details to think about. mlb trade rumors jumped on it also. i've done it before and had to be slapped back to reality after collecting all the facts.

brewers were pretty much tossing all their players on waivers anyways, not real surprised about it. they also are not planning any trades as far as i know. hoffman was pulled back, being one sign.
