Chris Narveson Strong But Brewers Fall To Reds

Brewers manager Ken Macha was not going to leave left-hander Chris Narveson in the game long enough to lose it. His decision made for a second-guessers delight.

Cody Stanley Powers Johnson City To Game One Win

Being aggressive paid off for Cody Stanley on Wednesday night.

Stanley slugged two homers and drove in three runs as the Johnson City Cardinals rolled past the Burlington Royals, 8-4 in the opener of their best-of-3 Appalachian League semifinal series.

Cardinals Return To KMOX In 2011

The Cardinals are coming home.

The club announced on Wednesday that, beginning in 2011, its games will once again be carried on the radio by iconic station KMOX (1120 AM), ending a five-year stint on KTRS (550 AM). The move marks a return to the outlet that carried Cardinals games from the mid-1950s through the 2005 season.
The Cardinals are going back to their radio roots.

As first reported today on STLtoday.com, the team announced late this afternoon that it will return its radio broadcasts to KMOX next season after five years at KTRS, where they had been airing after a 51-year run at KMOX.

Tony Cruz Returns To Double-A If Memphis Falls Short

Tony Cruz, one of the St. Louis’ Cardinals more polished catching prospects, could return to Double-A Springfield in the playoffs without being blocked by Minor League Baseball.

Colby Rasmus' Approach

There’s been lots of discussion about Colby Rasmus and TLR recently. A lot of it was centered on his approach at the plate, so I thought it would be good to spend the next couple of posts digging into the information that we have at hand that describes his approach.

Can Cardinals Come Back? They Did In 2001

This morning on the train platform we saw a man wearing a green Cardinals St. Patrick’s Day cap from spring training. It struck us as an odd juxtaposition: The Cardinals come to September 1 forlorn and facing a season-high seven-game deficit in the standings, and yet here was a symbol of the promise of a new season, in which hope and possibility abound. What a fool this man must be, right? All we need to do is reach for a refreshing dose of historical perspective to find whether a dram of hope might not be in order.

Tony LaRussa Still Doesn't Like Losing; Cardinals, Astros Respective Rivals; Colby Rasmus Slides To Seventh; Defense Has Been Solid; Ect...

Losing isn't fun for any manager, regardless of tenure.

The Cardinals won just two of their first nine games of a 10-game road that concluded on Wednesday in Houston. In his 15th season as manager in St. Louis and 32nd in the Major Leagues, Tony La Russa believes the rough stretches get harder to take the longer one stays in the game.

Brian Esposito Searching For Elusive At-Bat

Perhaps none of the players the Astros called up when rosters expanded are more grateful for the opportunity than 31-year-old catcher Brian Esposito. He had a very brief stint in the Major Leagues three years ago and has been toiling in the Minors with younger players ever since to get another chance.

Albert Pujols, Joey Votto, & MVP

The Cardinals' swoon will likely cost Albert Pujols a realistic chance at the MVP. I don't believe the MVP should be decided on the standings, but that's how many baseball writers frame the basis for the award. They'll always look to the first-place teams or the Cinderella teams for their MVP. To me, the award should be about one thing: who is the best player? I don't think it's fair to penalize a great player on a mediocre, disappointing or losing team by denying him an MVP nod simply because his teammates stink.

Don't Count Cardinals Out...Yet

Let's be serious for a moment, on this first day of September, and figure out what's left out there, realistically.

Appalachian League Playoff Preview

West Division rivals Johnson City and Elizabethton had playoff berths lined up early, leaving only their seeding to be decided down the stretch in the league's new expanded postseason format. The Pulaski Mariners sewed up the East on Sunday for the second time in three years, but the runner-up remained up in the air.

Fading Toward The Finish Line, Again

One of the worst months during the tenure of manager Tony La Russa closed Tuesday night for the St. Louis Cardinals with a somewhat fitting second shutout in as many nights. Even La Russa recognized the familiarity of the two losses, saying in his postgame comments to the media that there wasn't much to add.

Cardinals Minor League Notebook 9-1-10

Amaury Cazana, Mark Hamilton deliver homers in Memphis defeat, their first in eight games. Springfield's winning streak ends at three. Palm Beach's offense goes quietly in third consecutive loss. Devin Goodwin drives in eight in Quad Cities’ second straight win. Error hands Batavia extra-inning win. Johnson City drops third straight, head into playoffs.

Yadier Molina An Offensive Liability

There is no getting around it: Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina this season has been an offensive liability. The Cardinals rank 13th in the NL in OPS at catcher.

The Cardinals also are 14th at shortstop with Brendan Ryan, and 10th at second base only because of about 100 surprisingly good plate appearances from Aaron Miles and Tyler Greene. Skip Schumaker, too, is a disappointment.

More on the Cardinals’ collapse and the future of manager Tony La Russa later this week.

Checking The Numbers: Simulating The Triple Crown

At the end of last week I wrote about the idea that a Triple Crown is not a far-fetched feat this season. Miguel Cabrera is very unlikely to supplant Josh Hamilton atop the American League batting leaderboard, but in the National League, sluggers Joey Votto and Albert Pujols find themselves ranked first or second in all three categories.

Astros Call Up Brian Esposito From Triple-A

Esposito will be the third catcher on the roster after hitting .205 with two homers and 18 RBIs in 58 games with Round Rock and Corpus Christi this season. He is a veteran of 11 professional seasons, but has played in only one inning of a Major League game and has not had an at-bat.

Ryan Franklin Would Like More Work; No Moves At Deadline; Kyle Lohse Holds, Jeff Suppan Starts; Ect...

The oldest e-mail on Ryan Franklin's cell phone is almost a year old, and the Cardinals' closer plans to keep it there as a souvenir of his perfect month.
The St. Louis Cardinals did not make any last-minute roster acquisitions before Tuesday's deadline for a player outside the organization to be eligible for the postseason. The club had pursued a lefty reliever, but its preferred option did not clear waivers to make a deal possible. General manager John Mozeliak said positive reports of Dennys Reyes' health also limited the urgency to add a reliever.
