Cardinals Washington Whispers 5-1-09
I spoke with P.J. Walters about his successful ninth-inning stint on Thursday. He and Ryan Franklin warmed up with Walters coming in since it is a non-save situation. P.J. says he can warm up quickly and can pitch on consecutive days as he did with State College back in 2006. Yet he is the only reliever shown as not available on Tony La Russa’s Friday lineup card.

Mitchell Boggs, St. Louis Cardinals: Boggs, 25, joins the rotation because he takes too much time to warm up out of the bullpen. He throws in the low-90s with a sinker, slider and change. He needs to change speeds better and his control needs work. He posted a 7.25 ERA in six starts for the Cards last year.

A happier time filled with fanny packs, flannel shirts and blue jean shorts, greasers and socias, Celine Dion's Titanic song. Heck, we even remember lunches at the Max with Zach and the gang while we were living in San Francisco with our uncles Jesse and Joey, all while being pestered by our outrageous, though well-intentioned neighbor, Steve Urkel.

Games Of The Day 5-1-09
The Nationals get a chance to win a game as Jordan Zimmermann takes the hill. Jordan’s opposition batting stats aren’t that great, .286/.348/.500, but most of that came with the bases empty. He’ll face Todd Wellemeyer. Todd’s not walking many and keeping the ball in the park, but his low strikeout rate is leading to a lot of hits against him. His FIP is 2.97, indicating he’s been extremely unlucky.

Team Stats: RISP-y Business
So far this year, the Cardinals are the best with runners in scoring positing, hitting a robust .338. Ryan Ludwick (pictured, right) is hitting .435 and Chris Duncan (pictured, left) is hitting .350. Albert Pujols, as you might imagine, is leading the team with 21 RBIs with RISP.
The Cardinals' production with RISP will decline, but there's no reason to think it will dramatically fall off. Because of that, you can feel relatively safe with Cardinals' players as long as they're getting playing time.

2. Cardinals (Fell From #1)
Winners of seven out of nine, the Cardinals take three straight series against teams forecast to win at least 87 games. The Albert Pujols-led offense leads the league in scoring and is running a close second to the Dodgers in EqA. The staff has the league's second-lowest ERA, and while they don't miss many bats (14th in strikeouts), they're second in walk and homer rates. The infield defense could use some help however; with converted outfielder Skip Schumaker at the keystone, they're 13th in Defensive Efficiency.

Movin' On Up: Tyler Greene
Tyler Greene, SS, St. Louis Cardinals
CALLED UP: Recalled from Triple-A Memphis on April 30 when SS Brendan Ryan went on the DL.
DEBUT: April 30 in a 9-4 win against Washington. The starting shortstop, he batted eighth and went 1-for-5 with a single, an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored.
NOTES: Summoned from Memphis when the Cards found themselves down a pair of shortstops (Ryan on the DL and Khalil Greene sidelined with a forearm strain), the 2005 first-rounder was thrown right into the action and his bases-loaded infield single in the ninth helped cap a five-run rally. Though a shortstop for most of his pro career, he can also play second and third, which suits him perfectly for manager Tony LaRussa's four-man bench filled with versatile infielders.

Fun Start
The teams doing surprisingly well all seem to have good pitching in common. The Mariners, Royals and Blue Jays are 1,2,4 respectively in the American League in ERA, while Pittsburgh and St. Louis are 1-2 in the NL. The Cardinals are there despite losing Chris Carpenter to another injury. Of those teams, Toronto and St. Louis appear to have enough staying power, as they are both scoring runs as well as pitching well.
