Julian Tavarez Heads To Minors To, Jack Wilson Could Return Soon, Jorge Sosa Released, Russell Branyan Returning To Majors?

By accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket, right-hander Julian Tavarez [stats] signaled that he would prefer to be pitching in the minors rather than doing no throwing at all.

The Red Sox will not prevent him from getting another big league job, if they can trade or release him, plus they also gain some depth in the organization in case of an injury, a mutually beneficial situation for the player and club.

Tavarez never became a free agent, technically, and his acceptance of the assignment possibly caught some teams off guard. Once they get a look at him pitching in the minors and/or a spot opens up on their big league club, an interested team, such as the Rockies or Brewers, could then be more amenable to working a trade with the Red Sox.

The Sox quite possibly will have to eat much of the remainder of Tavarez’ $3.85 million 2008 salary.
Tavarez Goes Down

Shortstop Jack Wilson joined Class AA Altoona last night in Akron, Ohio, where he will play the Curve's entire three-game series before his left calf is evaluated again Friday.
From there?

"He's close. Put it that way," Pirates manager John Russell said. "There's still no exact date, but it's mostly a matter of getting over some fatigue he has after the fifth or sixth inning, which is to be expected."
Wilson Later In The Week?

The Mets placed reliever Jorge Sosa on unconditional release waivers after failing to trade him. Sosa was designated for assignment on May 13.
Waive Goodbye

Throughout his career, the Sounds' Russell Branyan has fit the definition of power hitter pretty comfortably.
